Cameron runs away

He said whatever the result he would remain PM, post referendum. He said he wouldn't "do a Blair", but would remain an MP.

So for the 2nd time in less than 3 months Cameron has run away from his promises.

Enoch Powell said that all political careers end in failure. Cameron's certainly has. Tim Farron gives his opinion.

Lib dems "Utterly oppose new Grammar Schools"

Theresa May's attempt to portray her Government as centrist modernisers has started to unravel as she launches a back to the 1950s plan to create new Grammar schools.

The Lib Dems utterly oppose this reactionary act.

An independent review by the Financial Times journalist Tim Hartford showed that Grammar schools have a harmful effect on educational attainment.

The Government's own social mobility Czar  said "more grammar schools would be a disaster".

Sir Michael Wilshaw, the chief inspector of schools, claimed the notion that the poor stand to benefit from the return of grammar schools "strikes me as quite palpable tosh and nonsense".

Lord Willetts, the former Tory cabinet minister who is now chairman of the Resolution Foundation, told the Today programme that the evidence shows poor children get squeezed out by grammars: "They do tend to be captured by the better-informed, more affluent parents."

With the collapse of the Labour Party, we Lib Dems are the only progressive force in British politics, capable of fighting this ring wing Government. Why not join us and help with the fight

Theresa May slaps down Mr Brexit

The Brexit farce limps on

More than 2 months after the narrow vote for Brexit, the Government is no closer to defining what it means. Lib Dem leader Tim Farron has already warned that the UK is being made a laughing stock abroad, by the Government's lack of a clear direction for a future outside the EU. The Minister for Brexit David Davies gave a bizarre speech to Parliament yesterday, which was as full of triumphalism for the Brexit "victory" as it was empty on any tangible plan or indeed sense of direction for the future.

This shambolic response to the referendum is all the more surprising because the Ministers who are in charge of delivering "Brexit", are the very same politicians who spent the last 25 and more years campaigning for it. So if even the Brexiteers don't understand what it means, or how it can be achieved, how can they argue that 17 million voted so decisively that no further electoral mandate is required to implement whatever "Brexit" turns out to be!

The Liberal Democrats demand a second referendum on the terms of Brexit. Why not join us and help with the fight?

Lib Dems welcome Shepshed resignation

Lib Dem spokesman said today " We are delighted to see that the Shepshed Town Councillor accused of racist posts on Facebook has resigned, his attempt to dismiss these posts as an attack on political correctness is frankly pathetic.

With the demise of the Labour party, the Lib Dems are the party for all progressives, why not join us?

Trotskyite intimidation in the Labour party

Huge Drop in Single-Use Plastic Bag Usage a Lib Dem Success

Tom call for a charge on single use plastic bags

Lib Dem MP Tom Brake campaigning for a plastic bag charge back in 2012

Plastic bag usage has plummeted in England since the introduction of a 5p charge last year, under the previous coalition government.

The number of single-use plastic bags used by shoppers in England has fallen by more than 85%. More than 7bn bags were handed out by seven main supermarkets in the year before the charge but this has been reduced to just over 500m in the first six months after the charge has been introduced.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron said:

"We always said the test of this policy would be by the amounts of bags that are cut from public consumption and the funds raised for charities - on both these tests this policy has passed.

"I want to pay tribute to Kate Parminter who fought tirelessly for this policy and today's figures are a testament to her. It is down to Liberal Democrats in Government that this policy happened - we announced it at our 2013 conference and we are now seeing what a huge impact it has had.

"The facts are simple; single use bags blight our towns and countryside, they trap and suffocate wildlife, and plastic bags take hundreds of years to degrade. These figures show that this policy is starting to stop that."

Interest Rate Cut "the only tool left in the shed"

Money / banknotes (pounds sterling) in handCommenting on the decision of the Bank of England to cut interest rates to a record low, Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson, Susan Kramer, said:

"This is a necessary move by the Bank of England to help our economy as it reels from the impact of Brexit, but we cannot pretend this isn't a deeply worrying sign.

"The Bank has now used the only major tool left in its shed. Over the coming years we are at risk of having to go into negative territory. We are at the whims of what happens next.

"It is crucial that we do not lock ourselves in to a race to the bottom, with interest rate cuts, devalued Sterling, tax rates that would be better suited to a tax haven and hiring freezes across business - all to offset the costs that will fall on all of us if Brexit negotiations fails to secure access to the single market. An economy based on these measures is not sustainable."

Councillor Ron Jukes in breach of Code of Conduct

Charnwood Borough Council's Member Conduct Panel has found that Conservative Borough Councillor Jukes was in breach of the Member's Code of Conduct, for remarks he made at Housing Management Advisory Board on 17th February 2016.  During a discussion regarding some tenants from minority communities indicating which their preferred language was, he asked ‘have we asked them if they would prefer to go back to the country they came from?’.

Council employees Mrs White and Mrs Ansell gave evidence to the panel the minutes report their evidence as being:

  • Mrs White confirmed she felt the comment made by Councillor Jukes was highly offensive and that her responsibility as an officer was to ensure fair and equal treatment of, and respect for, all residents, and the comment did not show that consideration.

  • Mrs Ansell confirmed she felt regret at not having challenged Councillor Jukes during the meeting but she felt it was not appropriate to do so with tenants present, but she did believe the comment made by Councillor Jukes had a racist overtone.

Councillor Jukes has been ordered to undertake training in the code of conduct  and requested not to attend the Housing Management Advisory Board meetings until the agreed training has been undertaken.

The minutes of the  Member Conduct Panel meeting.

Lib Dems regret that Councillor Juke's actions caused distress and offence to these Council employees.
